Suggestions for First Days with Students

8/29/18

So you have in-serviced your teachers and now need to plan your initial sessions with your students with hearing loss.  Some of them you may know and some may be new to you or they could all be old or new students.  Building a relationship is always first and foremost!  During the coming year you will be asking the students to do some things that will be unfamiliar or hard for them so they must trust you and learn that you are their advocate.

I have some freebie suggestions for you!

Trashkit self-advocacy Questions

Recycle-bin

This is a very fun game to see what questions your student can answer or needs to work on.  There are 8 questions to cut apart.  Put them face down on the table and the student picks them one at a time and answers them.  If they can answer correctly they can roll the question into a ball and throw it into the trashcan. If they can’t answer, they cannot throw it away.  A form with all the questions on it is included to keep your data.

Example questions:   When someone points to your hearing aids or cochlear implants and says “What is that?”, what do you say?

If your equipment doesn’t work at school, what should you do?

Even high schoolers like this!

Next up are Yes-No Questions to gauge what the students know about self-advocacy!  If you have or can borrow these buttons for a session, it is a fun way for the student to answer these Yes-No Questions

yes no buttons

Example Question:  When the dental hygienist came into our class, it was OK for me to move closer to her.

Next is a free activity in my TeachersPayTeachers Store that are general Getting to Know You Cards.

These can be used by any teacher for any subject!

Finally advice from this guy on the best way for educators to start their day!

Hi can you resend the link for the trashkit self advocacy questions? It is showing up as “error”.

    Thank you, Jessica
